Apple Wallet comes pre-installed on every iPhone, but most people only use it for Apple Pay. The app is packed with powerful features that can make your daily life easier, from instant access on your lock screen to passes that appear automatically when you arrive at a store.

Here are the Apple Wallet features you're probably missing out on, and how to start using them today.

1. Instant Lock Screen Access

You don't need to unlock your iPhone or open any app to access your passes. A quick double-tap on the side button (or home button on older iPhones) opens Apple Wallet immediately, even from the lock screen.

1

Open Settings

Go to Settings, then Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode)
2

Enable Wallet access

Scroll down to "Allow Access When Locked" and turn on Wallet
3

Confirm double-click is on

Go to Settings, Wallet & Apple Pay, and ensure "Double-Click Side Button" is enabled

Now you can double-click anywhere, whether you're on the lock screen, scrolling through photos, or in another app, and your Wallet opens instantly.

Security note

Face ID or Touch ID is required before pass details are displayed. When you double-click the side button, the Wallet interface opens, but your passes remain hidden until you authenticate. This has been the default behavior since iOS 15.4.

2. Location-Based Pass Notifications

One of Apple Wallet's smartest features is location awareness. When you arrive at a relevant location, the right pass automatically appears on your lock screen, ready to scan.

Store arrival

Loyalty cards appear when you're within 100 meters of the store

Time-based triggers

Boarding passes surface close to your flight departure time

No action needed

Your iPhone monitors location passively in the background

This works automatically for passes that include location data. When you tap the notification, the Wallet app opens directly to that pass.

Managing suggestions

If a pass appears too often, open it in Wallet, tap the info icon, and disable "Suggest on Lock Screen" for that specific pass.

3. Express Mode for Transit Cards

Express Mode lets you tap your iPhone or Apple Watch at transit gates without waking the screen, authenticating, or opening any app. Just tap and go.

1

Add a transit card

Add a supported transit card to Wallet (like Suica, PASMO, or compatible transit systems)
2

Enable Express Mode

Open Wallet, tap the card, tap the three dots menu, and select "Express Transit Card"
3

Tap through gates

Hold your device near the reader, no authentication required

Express Mode also works with car keys, hotel keys, and employee badges where supported. The feature is designed for speed when seconds matter.

4. Share Passes via AirDrop

Since iOS 17.2, you can share eligible passes and tickets with friends and family using AirDrop. This makes distributing concert tickets or boarding passes incredibly simple.

1

Open the pass

In Wallet, tap the pass you want to share
2

Bring devices together

Hold your iPhone near the recipient's iPhone (within a few centimeters)
3

Confirm transfer

Both devices will glow indicating a connection. Tap Share, then the recipient taps Accept

Not all passes are shareable

Some passes restrict sharing for security reasons. If you don't see the Share option, the pass issuer has disabled this feature. You may need to transfer through the original ticketing app instead.

5. Apple Watch Automatic Sync

When you add a pass to your iPhone, it automatically syncs to your Apple Watch. This means you can scan passes directly from your wrist without pulling out your phone.

Instant sync

Passes appear on both devices automatically

Real-time updates

Gate changes or updates sync to iPhone and Watch together

Quick access

Double-click the side button on your Watch

To ensure sync is working, open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to Wallet & Apple Pay, and confirm "Mirror my iPhone" is enabled.

6. Widgets for Quick Access

iOS lets you add Wallet widgets to your home screen and lock screen for one-tap access to specific passes or recent items.

Lock Screen Widget (iOS 16+)

1

Customize lock screen

Press and hold your lock screen until the Customize option appears
2

Edit widgets

Tap the widget area below the time, then tap the plus icon
3

Add Wallet

Search for "Wallet" and select a widget style

You can also add Wallet to the bottom corners of your lock screen for instant access alongside your flashlight or camera shortcuts.

NeatPass widgets

If you use NeatPass to create passes, you can also add NeatPass lock screen widgets to display specific passes without opening any app.

7. Siri Voice Commands

Siri can help you access passes hands-free. While Siri integration varies by pass type, you can use voice commands to quickly reach your Wallet.

"Hey Siri, open Wallet"

Opens the Wallet app directly

iOS 26+ enhancements

Check into flights and manage boarding passes via voice

With AirPods Pro and iOS 26, you can even receive spoken flight updates like gate changes through adaptive audio.

8. Automatic Pass Updates

Passes in Apple Wallet can update themselves automatically. When an airline changes your gate, or a venue updates event details, the pass refreshes without any action from you.

Real-time changes

Gate changes, seat updates, and delays sync instantly

Push notifications

Get alerts when important details change

Live Activities (iOS 16+)

Boarding passes can show status on your lock screen

This requires the pass issuer to support updates. Airline boarding passes and major event tickets typically include this capability.
