Why Does My QR Code Look Faded?

Understanding why Apple Wallet dims passes after the event date

1 min read

If your QR code or barcode appears greyed out or washed out, this is normal Apple Wallet behavior, not a NeatPass issue.

Your barcode still works

Even though it looks faded, venues can still scan it successfully. The barcode data remains completely intact.

What's Happening

Apple Wallet automatically dims passes when the event date has passed. This is a visual signal that the event is over, and it affects the entire pass appearance:

  • The QR code or barcode appears faded
  • Pass colors look muted
  • The pass may move to the "Archived" section

This behavior is consistent across all Apple Wallet passes, not just those created by NeatPass.

What You Can Do

1

Set the correct date before adding

Edit the pass date in NeatPass before adding to Wallet. Passes with future dates appear vibrant.

2

Find archived passes

Open Wallet, tap ... in the top right, then tap "Archived Passes" to find past-date passes.

3

Compare with future passes

Passes with upcoming dates will look normal. Past-date passes will look faded, this confirms the behavior is date-based.

Apple platform behavior

This dimming is controlled by iOS, not NeatPass. There's no way to prevent it for passes with past dates.
