Automatic Selection in Apple Wallet is easy to confuse with Lock Screen suggestions or Express Mode. It is a pass setting that changes how an eligible pass is reached and, for participating loyalty programs, how the card can surface at checkout.

It does not add contactless hardware to a barcode pass. If a pass only contains a visible barcode or QR code, the code still has to be shown to an optical scanner unless the issuer separately supports a contactless Wallet experience.

How to Turn On Automatic Selection

Apple places the control inside the individual pass settings, but the option does not appear on every pass. Check Pass Details to see whether it is available. If it is absent, use the normal Wallet opening path instead.

1

Open the pass

Open Wallet and tap the pass you want to check.
2

Open Pass Details

Tap the More button, then choose Pass Details.
3

Enable it if available

If Automatic Selection appears for this pass, turn it on.

For a pass created in NeatPass, the NeatPass Wallet export guide explains how to move it into Apple Wallet. The available Wallet settings then depend on the pass.

What Automatic Selection Changes

Apple says an enabled pass can be reached by double-clicking the side button on an iPhone with Face ID or the Home button on iPhone SE. You may still be asked to authenticate. You can also ignore the shortcut and open the pass directly in Wallet.

For a participating loyalty card, Automatic Selection can make the card appear when you are in the store. At a supported terminal, the loyalty interaction happens before Wallet switches to the default payment card. The exact sequence depends on the merchant and its reader.

The setting is not always available

A pass can work perfectly in Wallet without offering Automatic Selection. Open it directly when the setting is absent.

Automatic Selection, Lock Screen, and Express Mode

Lock Screen suggestions use different signals

Time and location relevance can make a pass appear on the Lock Screen near an event or place. That Apple behavior and user-selected widgets are separate from the Automatic Selection toggle.

If a pass stays in Wallet but no longer appears at the expected time or place, use the Lock Screen troubleshooting guide instead.

Express Mode is the contactless path

Express Mode is a separate contactless feature for eligible cards, keys, and passes. The Express Mode guide explains which contactless passes are eligible and when authentication can be skipped.

Keep the right pass ready for the right reader

NeatPass creates a standard Wallet pass from a compatible source with a static barcode.

Create a clear barcode pass with NeatPass

NeatPass can turn compatible static barcode data into a clear Wallet pass while preserving the encoded data from the source. Open it directly, surface it with widgets, or use Automatic Selection when Wallet offers that setting for the pass.

Check the NeatPass supported pass types to choose a layout that presents the information clearly. At checkout, present the barcode or use the contactless method supported by the issuer and reader.

When Automatic Selection is unavailable, NeatPass widgets offer quick access to the pass. Lock Screen and small widgets show pass information and open the full pass, while medium and large Home Screen widgets can keep a barcode ready to scan.

Selection, Relevance, and Reading Method

Automatic Selection helps an eligible pass come forward through Apple's shortcut and participating loyalty flow. Lock Screen relevance suggests a pass by context, while Express Mode covers eligible contactless experiences. For a NeatPass barcode pass, choose the available shortcut and present the visible code to the optical reader.
