Hotel room keys in Apple Wallet sometimes stop working. This common issue usually comes down to device positioning, Express Mode settings, or credentials that need refreshing. Here is how to fix it, plus what NeatPass can help with for hotel loyalty cards.

Important distinction: Hotel room keys use NFC technology, which is completely different from barcode-based loyalty cards. This article covers troubleshooting native hotel room keys. If you are looking to add a hotel rewards card with a barcode to Wallet, skip to the loyalty card section below.

How Hotel Room Keys Work in Apple Wallet

Hotel room keys in Apple Wallet use NFC (Near Field Communication), the same technology behind Apple Pay. When you hold your iPhone near the door lock, the phone transmits encrypted credentials that unlock the door.

This is fundamentally different from barcode passes:

NFC Room Keys
  • Tap phone to door lock
  • Encrypted wireless communication
  • Requires hotel infrastructure
  • Works without opening any app
  • Express Mode for instant access
Barcode Loyalty Cards
  • Show barcode to scanner
  • Visual data encoding
  • Works at any standard scanner
  • Can be created from screenshots
  • Works offline without special hardware

NeatPass limitation

NeatPass creates Wallet passes from barcodes and cannot help with NFC hotel room keys. Apple restricts NFC access to authorized partners like hotels, airlines, and payment providers. If your room key is not working, the solutions are below.

Which Hotels Support Apple Wallet Room Keys

Not all hotels offer Apple Wallet integration. As of 2026, supported chains include:

  • Hyatt - First chain to support Apple Wallet keys, available at select properties worldwide
  • Strawberry Hotels - Nordic hotel chain with Wallet key support
  • Club Quarters - Business hotel chain with NFC room keys
  • Select boutique hotels - Growing adoption among independent properties

Hilton and Marriott offer digital keys through their own apps but have not fully integrated with Apple Wallet's native room key feature.

Troubleshooting: Room Key Not Working

If your hotel room key in Apple Wallet is not unlocking the door, try these steps in order:

1

Check device positioning

Hold the top of your iPhone (where the NFC antenna is located) against the door lock. On Apple Watch, hold the display side against the lock. The tap point is usually marked on the lock.
2

Verify Express Mode is enabled

Open the Wallet app, tap your hotel key, tap the three dots menu, and confirm Express Mode is turned on. With Express Mode, you do not need to authenticate or wake your phone.
3

Check your device software

Update to the latest iOS version. Hotel keys require recent software. Go to Settings, General, Software Update.
4

Verify iCloud and Face ID setup

Hotel keys require your Apple ID signed into iCloud with two-factor authentication, and Face ID or Touch ID enabled.
5

Re-add the key from the hotel app

Delete the key from Wallet, then open the hotel's app and add it again. Sometimes the key credentials need to be refreshed.
6

Contact the front desk

If nothing works, the issue may be with the door lock or your room assignment. The hotel can re-issue your digital key or provide a physical card.

Common Issues and Solutions

Low battery

Keys work for up to 5 hours after battery dies via Power Reserve

No internet needed

Room keys work offline once added to Wallet

Room change not reflected

Keys update automatically, wait a few minutes or re-add

Express Mode disabled

Without Express Mode, you must authenticate each time

Power Reserve

Even if your iPhone battery is critically low, the room key continues to work for up to five hours after the device needs charging. This is a built-in safety feature.

Most hotel chains issue loyalty cards with barcodes for earning points at check-in, accessing member rates, and redeeming rewards. These cards often live in the hotel's app, requiring login every time you need them.

Quick Access at Check-In

Hotel room keys in Apple Wallet are convenient when they work. If yours is not functioning, the issue is usually device positioning, Express Mode settings, or a need to re-add the key from the hotel app. For persistent problems, the front desk can help.
