Most libraries don't support Apple Wallet. Checking out books means opening the library app, logging in, and waiting for your barcode to load. Or digging through your physical wallet for a card you might have left at home. There's an easier way to keep your library card ready.
Why Most Libraries Don't Support Apple Wallet
Unlike airlines and retail chains that have embraced digital wallets, most public library systems haven't added Apple Wallet integration. Library management software often dates back decades, and adding Wallet support requires technical work that doesn't fit into shrinking library IT budgets.
A few exceptions exist. Some city libraries and university libraries offer digital cards in their apps. But for most libraries, you're stuck with physical cards or clunky apps.
Without native Wallet support, checking out books means:
Extra steps at checkout
Open app, log in, navigate to your card
No lock screen access
Can't double-click to show your library barcode
Physical cards to carry
Another card in your wallet, easy to forget
App login issues
Session expired, forgot password, app crashes
Library Barcode Types
Library cards typically use one of three barcode formats: Codabar, Code 39, or Code 128. Codabar is most common and encodes your patron ID and library system code in 14 digits. Code 39 and Code 128 are also widely used, especially in newer library management systems.
The good news: NeatPass supports all these formats. Whether your library card has a traditional barcode or QR code, it can be converted to an Apple Wallet pass.
The Workaround That Works
The solution is simple: photograph or screenshot your library card barcode, then use NeatPass to convert it into a native Apple Wallet pass.
NeatPass extracts the barcode data from your image and creates a real Wallet pass. The barcode contains your actual patron ID and scans perfectly at self-checkout machines and circulation desks.

Benefits in Apple Wallet
Once your library card lives in Apple Wallet, you get features that library apps simply cannot provide.
Instant lock screen access
Double-click side button shows your library card
Works offline
No internet needed at the self-checkout kiosk
Location-aware
Card can auto-appear when you're at your library
Auto-brightness for scanning
Screen brightens automatically for the scanner
No app login required
Wallet passes never ask for your password
Declutter your phone
One less app to keep updated and logged into
Your card works offline, so spotty library wifi won't slow you down. For details on how NeatPass handles your data, see our privacy FAQ. Unlike some library apps that track your checkout history, Wallet passes are just data on your device.
Why not just use a photo?
Self-Checkout Compatibility
Modern library self-checkout kiosks use CCD barcode scanners that read from screens. Most machines work well with Apple Wallet passes. The key is ensuring your pass displays a properly formatted barcode with sufficient quiet zones.
If your library uses older scanners that struggle with screens, try increasing your phone's brightness. Apple Wallet automatically maximizes brightness when displaying passes, but older CCD scanners may need more light.
What About OverDrive and Digital Libraries?
OverDrive (now Libby) is the popular app for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks from public libraries. While Libby stores your library card for digital borrowing, it doesn't export cards to Apple Wallet. You still need a separate solution for in-person checkout.
The Libby app can display your card's barcode, making it a good source for a screenshot. Screenshot from Libby and import into NeatPass to create a Wallet pass that works both at the library and for digital borrowing.
Multiple Library Cards
Many people have cards for multiple library systems, like their city library, university library, and regional consortium. NeatPass handles this well. Add each card as a separate pass and organize them in your library. Apple Wallet can show the right card based on your location.
