American Airlines supports Apple Wallet for boarding passes through the American Airlines iOS app and, where supported, through aa.com mobile boarding pass delivery. Check in, tap Add to Wallet, and the pass installs on the iPhone for travel day.

As of April 13, 2026, American Airlines also supports the redesigned iOS 26 boarding pass experience: Apple Maps airport navigation, destination guides, Find My Baggage tracking, and a quick shortcut back to the American Airlines app, all without leaving Wallet.

What iOS 26 Adds to the American Airlines Pass

On iOS 26, American Airlines boarding passes in Apple Wallet surface extra information that used to live in the airline app. Everything stays accessible with a tap from the lock screen.

Apple Maps integration

Jump straight into Apple Maps for the departure airport and terminal

Find My Baggage

Track checked luggage from the pass via Find My, where supported

Shortcut to American Airlines app

One tap returns to the AA app for upgrades, seat changes, and chat

Destination guides

Local info tiles appear alongside flight details at a glance

About iOS 26 Live Activities

Apple's June 2025 announcement listed American Airlines among the launch carriers for the redesigned iOS 26 Wallet boarding passes. Whether a specific flight shows a Live Activity with gate, terminal, and boarding time on the Lock Screen depends on the pass American Airlines issues for that flight. If nothing appears, open the pass manually inside Wallet.

How to Add an American Airlines Boarding Pass to Apple Wallet

The fastest path is the American Airlines iOS app. aa.com can also deliver mobile boarding passes by email or device wallet where supported, but web and email flows do not expose the Wallet button as consistently as the app.

1

Install the American Airlines app

Download American Airlines from the App Store and sign in with AAdvantage credentials. If you prefer the web flow, aa.com can send a mobile boarding pass by email or to a device wallet on supported trips.
2

Complete online check-in

Open the trip inside the app within 24 hours of departure and finish check-in. The app issues the mobile boarding pass once check-in succeeds.
3

Open the boarding pass view

Tap the boarding pass for the traveler and flight leg. Each passenger and each leg has a separate pass, so repeat these steps for every pass needed.
4

Tap Add to Apple Wallet

Tap Add to Wallet on the pass screen. Confirm the Apple Wallet preview and tap Add in the top right. The pass lands in Wallet alongside other cards and tickets.
5

Repeat for companions

Back out and select the next traveler. Add each pass individually. Passes for other people can be shared via AirDrop, Messages, or Mail from Wallet.

For general installation tips that apply to any iPhone pass, see the guide to adding passes to Wallet.

TSA PreCheck on the American Airlines Wallet Pass

TSA PreCheck only works if the indicator prints on the boarding pass itself. American Airlines attaches it based on the Known Traveler Number in the reservation.

  • Add KTN before check-in - Save the Known Traveler Number in the AAdvantage profile or add it to the trip before checking in
  • Look for the PreCheck marker - Participating airlines print indicators like TSA PRE, TSAPRECHK, or TSA PreCheck on the pass itself
  • Refresh after adding the KTN - If the KTN went in after check-in, refresh the mobile boarding pass or re-add it to Wallet to get a new pass with the indicator
  • No indicator, no PreCheck lane - Without the printed marker on the pass, TSA will not accept the PreCheck lane, even if the traveler is enrolled

Digital ID at TSA checkpoints

At more than 250 TSA checkpoints, eligible digital IDs, including supported state IDs and driver's licenses in Apple Wallet, can be used alongside the boarding pass for identity verification. Digital ID does not replace the boarding pass, is not required for PreCheck, and TSA still advises carrying a physical ID.

AAdvantage Status and Boarding Groups

AAdvantage tiers map to American Airlines boarding groups: Executive Platinum boards in Group 1, Platinum Pro in Group 2, Platinum in Group 3, and Gold in Group 4. ConciergeKey is invitation only. The boarding group is encoded in the pass barcode and printed in the pass fields.

What the pass reliably shows
  • Boarding group number in the pass fields
  • Flight number, gate, terminal, and seat
  • Priority markers printed by American Airlines
  • Barcode that scanners read for group and priority
Things that vary
  • Exact visual tier badge on the pass template
  • Oneworld alliance markings placement
  • Background image and colors between flights
  • Upgrade status fields that update close to departure

Fallback: When the American Airlines App Cannot Add to Wallet

Bookings made through online travel agencies, corporate portals, or older reservations sometimes do not expose the Add to Apple Wallet button even after check-in. The PDF boarding pass still works as a source.

1

Get the PDF or mobile boarding pass

Check in on aa.com or inside the app and download the PDF, or capture a screenshot of the mobile boarding pass with the barcode fully visible.
2

Open NeatPass and import the image

Tap the plus button in NeatPass and select the screenshot from Photos, or pick the PDF from Files. No account and no cloud upload is required.
3

Let on-device AI fill the pass

NeatPass uses Apple's MLX framework on-device to detect the barcode and read flight number, route, and date from the image. Review and edit any field before saving.
4

Add the Wallet pass

Tap Add to Apple Wallet. The pass installs in Apple Wallet with the same barcode data as the original, so scanners at TSA and the gate read the same information.

American Airlines boarding passes typically use PDF417 or Aztec codes, both covered by the list of supported barcode formats. To see every way a screenshot, PDF, or image can enter the app, check the import methods overview.

Why a Wallet Pass Beats Opening the AA App at the Gate

The American Airlines app is fine on the couch. At a busy gate, Apple Wallet is faster and more reliable than launching an app and tapping through menus.

Double-tap side button

Wallet opens directly to the pass, no app launch or menus

Works in airplane mode

Wallet passes stay readable even when the airport Wi-Fi drops

Auto-brightness at scanners

Apple Wallet automatically brightens the screen for the gate reader

Lock screen suggestion

The pass surfaces automatically as departure approaches

That last point matters when everyone in line is on airport Wi-Fi and the AA app is loading spinners. Wallet uses on-device offline mode, so the barcode is ready instantly. For a quick-glance view of gate and seat without even unlocking, set up lock screen widgets.

Quick Access at the Gate

American Airlines native Wallet support covers most travelers, and a PDF fallback handles the rest. Either way, Wallet keeps the boarding pass a double-tap away when the boarding announcement starts.
