Apple Wallet doesn't support vehicle registration cards. Most states still hand you a paper slip or a PDF, and there's no "Add to Wallet" button anywhere on the DMV website. Whether you need your registration during a traffic stop, at an emissions inspection, or just for your own records, here's how to get it into Wallet anyway.

The Current State of Digital Vehicle Registration

Apple Wallet supports driver's licenses in a growing number of states, but vehicle registration is a different story. Only West Virginia currently offers a digital registration card that can be added directly to Apple or Google Wallet after an online renewal.

A handful of other states allow electronic display of registration documents. New Jersey emails a PDF registration after online renewal that's legally valid on your phone. Michigan and Tennessee passed laws explicitly allowing digital display. Washington, D.C. offers a digital registration card through its DMV app. California provides vehicle titles through the CA DMV Wallet app.

For everyone else, the process looks the same: you get a paper registration, maybe a PDF if you renewed online, and you're expected to keep it in your glove compartment.

Why Paper Registration Falls Short

Left in the glove box

When you need it at an inspection or service appointment, it's in the car you didn't drive

Faded and unreadable

Paper registration slips deteriorate from heat, sun, and general wear

Buried in a PDF

Digging through emails or files app during a traffic stop is stressful

Multiple vehicles

Keeping track of registrations across two or three cars gets messy fast

The Workaround: Registration in Apple Wallet

If your registration document has a barcode or QR code, you can convert it into a native Apple Wallet pass. Many state registrations include a PDF417 barcode or QR code that encodes your vehicle identification number, plate number, and registration details.

Screenshot your PDF registration, photograph your paper document, or scan the barcode directly. NeatPass extracts the barcode data and creates a Wallet pass that's accessible from your lock screen.

Even if your registration is plain text without a barcode, you can photograph it and create a visual-reference pass for quick access. No more digging through the glove compartment.

About registration barcodes

Vehicle registrations commonly use PDF417 (the wide rectangular barcode on the back of driver's licenses) or QR codes. NeatPass detects and extracts these automatically. See supported barcode types for the full list.

Step-by-Step: Registration to Apple Wallet

1

Locate your registration document

Find your paper registration card, PDF from your state's DMV website, or renewal confirmation email. If you renewed online, check your email for the PDF attachment.
2

Screenshot or photograph it

Take a clear photo of the paper document or screenshot the PDF. Make sure any barcode is fully visible with clear white space around it.
3

Import into NeatPass

Open NeatPass and tap the plus button. Select your photo or screenshot. You can also use the Share Extension directly from Photos or Files.
4

AI reads your registration

On-device AI analyzes the image, detects any barcodes, and auto-fills pass details like your vehicle make, plate number, and expiration date. Everything stays on your device. See the privacy FAQ for details.
5

Customize your pass

Add a title like "Honda Civic Registration" or "Blue Truck - TX" and pick a color. You can add custom fields for your VIN, insurance info, or anything else you want at hand. Learn more about customizing pass design.
6

Add to Apple Wallet

Tap "Add to Wallet" and your registration is now accessible from your lock screen. Double-click your side button to show it instantly.

Pro tip: Multiple vehicles

Create separate passes for each vehicle and use different colors to tell them apart at a glance. Use lock screen widgets to pin your primary vehicle's registration for even faster access.

States with Digital Registration Support

A few states have moved beyond paper. Here's where things stand:

West Virginia

The only state where you can add your registration directly to Apple or Google Wallet. After renewing online, you receive an email with instructions to download the digital card to your wallet. West Virginia also launched Mobile ID in Apple Wallet in October 2025.

New Jersey

Since March 2023, online renewal generates a legally valid PDF registration emailed to you. The law explicitly states it can be shown as an electronic image on a smartphone. It is valid for law enforcement, courts, and any entity requiring registration proof.

Michigan and Tennessee

Both states passed laws allowing drivers to present a digital photograph or electronic image of their current registration. These laws also include important privacy protections: showing your phone does not constitute consent to search your device.

Washington, D.C. and California

D.C. offers a digital registration card through its DMV app, which can also be added to Apple Wallet. California provides vehicle titles through the CA DMV Wallet app, though titles cannot be added to Apple Wallet natively.

For states not listed here, check whether your DMV provides a PDF after online renewal. Even without explicit digital display laws, having your registration accessible beats fumbling through your glove box.

Benefits of Registration in Apple Wallet

Once your registration lives in Apple Wallet, you gain advantages no DMV app provides.

Instant lock screen access

Double-click side button to show your registration immediately

Works offline

No cell signal needed, works anywhere

All vehicles in one place

Multiple registrations organized in a single app

No login required

No DMV app username or password to remember

Apple Watch sync

Access your registration from your wrist

Auto-brightness for scanning

Screen brightens automatically when showing a barcode

For details on offline functionality, see the offline mode guide. Unlike DMV apps that may need network access, Wallet passes are stored locally on your device.

What If Your Registration Has No Barcode?

Not all registration documents include scannable barcodes. Some states issue plain-text paper slips with no machine-readable data. In that case, photograph your registration and import it into NeatPass as a visual-reference pass.

The pass won't be scannable, but you'll have a clear image of your registration accessible from your lock screen. That's still faster than reaching into the glove compartment or scrolling through your camera roll. Check the guide on import methods for all the ways to get documents into NeatPass.

Most DMVs have no plans to support Apple Wallet for vehicle registration. The few states with digital options use their own apps, not native Wallet integration. But you don't need to wait for your state to catch up.

With NeatPass, your vehicle registration joins your boarding passes, insurance cards, and membership cards in Apple Wallet. One tap access from your lock screen. No glove compartment digging. No DMV app login. Just the information you need, when you need it.
