The good news first: the LA Metro TAP card works natively in Apple Wallet. You can add it straight from the Wallet app, set it as Express Transit, and tap to ride across LA Metro and dozens of other agencies in LA County. So when TAP is not working on your iPhone, it is almost always a fixable setup issue, not a missing feature.

The usual culprits are Express Transit being switched off, the iPhone not held against the reader correctly, a stored value load that has not synced yet, or a region or iOS setting blocking the add screen. This guide walks through each fix in order, from the fastest to the most thorough.

Confirm TAP Can Be Added Natively

TAP has been available in Apple Wallet since 2020. There is a real TAP - Greater Los Angeles transit card in the Wallet app, so you do not need any third party app to add it. You do need an iPhone 8 or later on iOS 13.6 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, since older hardware cannot hold a transit card.

How to add TAP to Apple Wallet

1

Open Wallet and tap the plus icon

Launch the Apple Wallet app and tap the plus button in the top corner, then choose Transit Card.
2

Select TAP - Greater Los Angeles

Pick TAP from the list of transit cards. If it does not appear, jump to the region and iOS fixes further down.
3

Add value and confirm

Choose a starting balance, confirm with Face ID or Touch ID, and the new TAP card appears in Wallet ready to tap.

Moving a plastic TAP card

Already have a plastic card? Open the TAP LA app, sign in to your TAP account, select the card, and choose Transfer Card to Apple Wallet. The balance and passes move over and the plastic card is deactivated.

Fix 1: TAP Not Tapping at the Reader

If the card is in Wallet but nothing happens at the yellow reader, work through these three checks first. They resolve the large majority of tap failures.

Turn on Express Transit

Go to Settings, Wallet & Apple Pay, Express Transit Card, and select your TAP card. This lets it tap without Face ID or unlocking. A card that needs unlocking every time is the number one complaint.

Hold the right edge to the reader

The NFC antenna sits near the top of the iPhone. Hold the top edge flat against the yellow reader for a second and wait for the beep and green light before pulling away.

Restart the iPhone

A quick power off and on clears temporary NFC glitches. If the reader still ignores the phone after a restart, move on to the more thorough fixes below.

Express Transit is not the same as Apple Pay

Express Transit is what lets a transit card tap without unlocking. If you are unsure how it differs from a normal contactless payment, the Express Mode explainer breaks down exactly when the phone taps automatically and when it asks for Face ID.

Fix 2: Balance or Money Not Showing

A missing balance is usually a sync delay rather than lost money. Where you loaded the value decides how fast it appears:

  • Add Money inside the Wallet pass credits the card almost instantly, since it goes directly to the digital card.
  • Loads in the TAP LA app or at a vending machine can sit pending and only post the next time you tap a reader.
  • Pending transfers from a plastic card may take a few minutes to settle before the full balance shows.

Force a pending balance to sync

If money still has not appeared, tap any TAP reader once. The reader pulls down any pending value and updates the card. If it stays missing after that, contact TAP at 866.827.8646.

Keep your barcode tickets and loyalty cards tidy in Wallet

NeatPass makes it easy to convert any ticket, pass, or loyalty card to Apple Wallet.

Fix 3: TAP Will Not Add at All

If TAP never appears in the transit card list, or the add screen errors out, the issue is almost always region, software, or account related.

Work through these in order

1

Set the region to United States

Transit card availability is region gated. In Settings, General, Language & Region, confirm the region is United States, then reopen Wallet and try again.
2

Update iOS

An outdated iOS can hide newer transit cards. Install the latest update under Settings, General, Software Update, then restart and retry.
3

Check the device meets the minimum

TAP needs an iPhone 8 or later on iOS 13.6 or later. A device below that line simply cannot add the card.
4

Sign in to iCloud and Wallet

Make sure you are signed in to iCloud and that Wallet is enabled in iCloud settings, since a signed out device can block new passes.

When a card is stuck or corrupted

If a TAP card behaves oddly after all the above, remove it from Wallet, restart the iPhone, then add it back. For a registered card, the balance is tied to your TAP account and restores when you re-add it. Removing an unregistered card can forfeit its value, so register first.

Where NeatPass Fits, and Where It Does Not

Being clear about scope: NeatPass cannot create a TAP card, cannot turn on Express Transit, and cannot fix tap-to-ride fares. Those are secure NFC transit credentials that only Apple and Metro issue. NeatPass solves a different problem, the barcode and PDF passes that often have no official Add to Apple Wallet button.

What NeatPass does handle

  • Event and movie tickets that arrive as a PDF or barcode with no Wallet button.
  • Loyalty and membership cards you would otherwise keep in a slow app.
  • Parking, gym, and library passes built from a photo, screenshot, or PDF.

What NeatPass cannot do

  • It cannot issue or replace an NFC transit card like TAP.
  • It cannot enable Express Transit or change how a tap-to-ride fare is charged.

For the passes it does handle, NeatPass reads 18 supported barcode formats, offers several import methods, and surfaces passes through lock screen widgets for one-tap access at the door.

It also keeps your data on device with no account required, as the privacy FAQ explains in detail.

Works without a connection

Barcode passes added with NeatPass open instantly even with no signal, thanks to offline mode, which is handy when station reception is weak.
