Apple Wallet can hold far more than credit cards. From boarding passes to car keys, transit cards to gym memberships, your iPhone can replace most of what clutters your physical wallet. But not everything works the same way.
Some cards add natively with one tap. Others need a third-party app. And many everyday cards have no official Apple Wallet support at all. Here is the complete breakdown of what you can add, how to add it, and where NeatPass fills the gaps.
Payment Cards
Native support: Yes, through Apple Pay
Credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards from most major banks work natively with Apple Wallet. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover are all supported. You add them directly in the Wallet app or through your bank's app.

Prepaid cards
Most prepaid Visa/Mastercard cards supported
NeatPass role: None needed. Payment cards have full native support.
Transit Cards
Native support: Limited to select cities
Transit cards work natively in some major cities. In supported areas, you can add your transit card directly to Wallet and use Express Mode to tap through turnstiles without unlocking your phone.
Other supported systems include OMNY (New York), Hop Fastpass (Portland), and transit cards in Japan, China, and Hong Kong.
NeatPass role: For cities without native support, NeatPass cannot replicate transit card NFC functionality. However, if your transit card has a barcode for balance checks or account access, you can store that in Wallet for quick reference.
Boarding Passes
Native support: Yes, from most airlines
Most major airlines offer an "Add to Apple Wallet" button when you check in online or through their app. Your boarding pass appears automatically at the airport based on time and location.
Airline boarding passes
Check in via app or website, tap Add to Wallet
Train tickets
Amtrak, Deutsche Bahn, Eurostar, and more
NeatPass role: If you receive a boarding pass as a PDF or email without an Add to Wallet option, NeatPass can extract the barcode and create a Wallet pass. See our guide on converting PDF boarding passes.
Event Tickets
Native support: Depends on the ticketing platform
Major ticketing platforms like Ticketmaster, AXS, and SeatGeek offer Apple Wallet integration for many events. Smaller venues and independent ticketing systems often do not.
Ticketmaster, AXS, SeatGeek
Usually offer Add to Wallet option
Small venues, Eventbrite
Often PDF or screenshot only
NeatPass role: For tickets that only come as PDFs, screenshots, or email attachments, NeatPass extracts the barcode and creates a proper Wallet pass. Learn more about adding concert tickets to Wallet.
Convert any ticket to Apple Wallet
NeatPass makes it easy to convert any ticket, pass, or loyalty card to Apple Wallet.
Loyalty and Rewards Cards
Native support: Very limited
This is where Apple Wallet support gets sparse. Most retailers prefer their own apps because they can track your shopping habits, location, and purchase history. That data is valuable for targeted advertising. Only a small percentage offer native Wallet passes, and most have not bothered to implement support.
Walgreens, Target, Starbucks
Offer native Wallet passes via their apps
Most grocery stores, local shops
No native support, plastic card only
NeatPass role: This is the primary use case for NeatPass. Scan any barcode from a physical loyalty card or app screenshot and convert it to an Apple Wallet pass. See our guide on digitizing physical loyalty cards. Unlike retailer apps, NeatPass never tracks your shopping habits or shares your data. Learn more in our privacy FAQ.
Works everywhere
Gift Cards
Native support: Limited
Apple Account balance (from Apple gift cards) integrates directly with Wallet. Some retailers like Target and Best Buy offer Wallet passes for their gift cards. Most store gift cards do not have native support.
NeatPass role: If your gift card has a barcode, NeatPass can convert it to a Wallet pass. See our guide on adding gift cards to Apple Wallet.
Membership Cards
Native support: Rarely
Gym memberships, museum passes, warehouse club cards, library cards, and professional organization memberships rarely offer native Apple Wallet support. Most require their own app or a physical card.
NeatPass role: Perfect for membership cards. Scan your gym barcode, museum membership, or library card once and access it from Wallet forever. Works completely offline. See guides for gym cards, museum memberships, and library cards.
Insurance Cards
Native support: Very rare
A few health insurers offer Apple Wallet passes through their apps, but most do not. You typically need to open the insurer's app, log in, and navigate to find your card, which is slow and unreliable at a pharmacy counter or doctor's office.
NeatPass role: Take a photo of your insurance card and create a Wallet pass. The barcode (if present) can be scanned, and you can add member ID and group number as text fields. Learn more about adding insurance cards to Wallet.
Digital Keys
Native support: Yes, but hardware-dependent
Apple Wallet supports car keys, hotel room keys, and home keys, but only with specific compatible hardware. You cannot manually add a key to Wallet without manufacturer support.
Car Keys
Car keys work with supported vehicles from BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, BYD, and Mercedes-Benz. Porsche, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Rivian are adding support in 2026. Toyota integration is expected soon.
Hotel Keys
Hotel room keys work at select properties from Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott brands. The hotel must have compatible NFC locks and support for Apple Wallet integration.
Home Keys
Home keys require a compatible smart lock with NFC support. Brands include Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure Lock 2, Level Lock+, and Aqara smart locks.
NeatPass role: None. Digital keys require NFC hardware integration that cannot be replicated with a pass. However, NeatPass can store hotel confirmation numbers, parking garage codes, or other access information as text on a custom pass.
Government IDs
Native support: Limited to select US states
Driver's licenses and state IDs can be added to Apple Wallet in 14 US states and territories: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico. More states are expected in 2026.
US passport holders can also add their passport to Wallet for domestic travel and identity verification at TSA checkpoints.
Not a full replacement
NeatPass role: None for official ID features. NeatPass cannot create a verifiable government ID. However, you can store a photo of your ID card on a pass for quick reference when the official digital version is not accepted.
Student IDs
Native support: At participating universities
Universities using credential providers like Transact, CBORD, or TouchNet can offer student IDs in Apple Wallet. Participating schools include Duke, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, University of Alabama, Clemson, and many others.
NeatPass role: If your university does not support native Wallet IDs but your physical student ID has a barcode, NeatPass can create a pass for it. See our guide on student IDs in Apple Wallet.
Quick Reference: Support by Card Type
Legend: Green icons indicate full native support. Blue icons indicate partial or conditional support. Rose icons indicate limited native support where NeatPass provides the best solution.

Convert your cards to Wallet

Apple Wallet handles payment cards, transit, and boarding passes well. For everything else, the support is inconsistent at best. Loyalty cards, gym memberships, insurance cards, and most everyday cards still rely on physical plastic or clunky apps.
NeatPass fills these gaps. Scan any barcode card once, customize how it looks, and add it to Apple Wallet. Your passes work offline, sync across your Apple devices, and appear on your lock screen when relevant. Check how to add passes to Wallet to get started.
